(AP) A decision by the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority to switch a children's program from afternoon to late night is "like putting the news on after school while parents are still at work," says one protesting youth.

Matt Galloway and Marc Airhart, both 12, are upset at a decision by OETA to move Doctor Who, public television's flamboyant Victorian-clad science fiction hero, from 5 p.m. to a 10 p.m., post-bedtime, time slot.

"Originally, it was a children's program and I consider myself a child," Galloway said. "I don't think it's right to switch it to a time where people it's made for can't watch it."

The two seventh-graders circulated a petition at their school to get the program's time slot changed. Teachers, a principal and students, 115 people in all, signed the petition and the two sent it to OETA. The authority has responded, but hasn't changed its mind.

"We are certainly in agreement with your basic concern," wrote OETA in a response.

"The move of Doctor Who from 5 p.m. each day was a very tough choice for us to make. We knew lots of people had joined Doctor Who on a regular basis and that they would be upset with the move. We hoped for a better place for the show, but it was just not possible."

OETA said the program was pushed back after the McNeill-Lehrer Report was expanded to an hour, causing rescheduling of the Oklahoma Report and the Nightly Business Report.

Airhart said he was "really excited" to receive the letter. "I wanted to see what they said, but then I felt a little disappointed. They did show some concern in writing the letter and giving me the background why," he said.

Galloway will try to catch the show on Friday nights and see reruns on Saturday.
