THE tremendous success of the children's television series about a muddle-headed, but at the same time brilliant, inventor, his young relations and a couple of normal "earthlings" as they dash around the universe in a time machine shaped like a telephone box, had to be taken up by the movie-makers.
Changes have been made - some understandable, others a little puzzling - but the broad picture is the same, and most important of all, the enemy are those trend-setting monsters the Daleks.
Yes, It's "Dr. Who and the Daleks" who take up the screen at the Dies Picture House from Tuesday onwards next week, and so successful has the Min proved to be that it is almost certain that more Dr. Who adventures will follow.
William Hartnell has been replaced in the leading role by Peter Cushing, perhaps a better-known name nowadays, although Billy was starring in pictures 20 years ago. But the most significant change and here most filmgoers will be in full agreement with the producers is in the juvenile lead. The stiff-upper-lip schoolteacher steps out of the picture and into it, for a little light relief, comes that engaging young comedian, Roy Castle.
It's a slip by Roy that sets Tardis, the time machine, off on a trip through space that ends with Dr. Who and his friends involved in a war between the Daleks and the gentle Thals on an unknown planet at an unknown time.
