BONNIE Longford takes over as Doctor Who's 26th assistant on Saturday with distinction of being his only companion who can scream in the key of F!

And there is a lot of screaming to do when she joins the doctor, now on trial by the Time Lords. Bonnie said yesterday.

The two main requirements of any female companion. are to be able to run down a corridor screaming with conviction and to say "What do we do next, doctor?" — also with conviction.

"I can now do both quite well," said Bonnie who plays Melanie, the assistant who takes over from Perry.

"Melanie is a 21-year-old computer programmer from Pease Pottage in Sussex," said Bonnie. "She's a pretty game-girl, headstrong and independent, but supportive of the doctor

"She's into carrot juice, but I'm not - she's into exercise while I'm into dancing," said Bonnie.

She will be appearing in six episodes of this new series.
