DOCTOR WHO: THE COMPLETE THIRD SERIES ★★★

Doctor Who, the BBC's iconic and brilliantly resurrected science fiction adventure show, has moved into its fourth season (or series, as the British so confusingly put it), but American audiences who want to catch the third season —the first without Rose, the popular companion played by Billie Piper, and the second with David Tennant's 10th Doctor—can now do so with this attractively packaged six-DVD package. One high point, as always, is that viewers get full episodes, rather than the hamhanded "edited" cuts made for American television on the SciFi Channel. This season spotlights Tennant's occasionally shrill, but genuinely likable, interpretation of the last Time Lord, as he adventures with new Companion Martha Jones (the pleasant Freema Agyeman), not always to the intermittently lovestruck Martha's benefit. This season suffers more than earlier efforts from extremely variable writing. At least two of the episodes may be the worst ever allowed on the screen by talented showrunner Russell T. Davies. On the other hand, the final six episodes may be among the ten best of his entire revived series, marked by some of Tennant's finest performances, the irrepressible John Barrowman as fan favorite Captain Jack Harkness, and charismatic British actor John Simm as the latest incarnation of one of the Doctor's greatest foes. The package also carries a fine collection of extras, including distilled mini-segments of the series' adjunct show, "Doctor Who Confidential." No MPAA rating. (In stores now.)
