THE BBC has been forced to slap an age warning on Doctor Who after scores of complaints from angry parents.

They received 60 calls from viewers claiming their children were hiding behind the sofa and left unable to sleep.

Last week's episode, which pulled in 8.9 million viewers, saw the Doctor fighting ghoulish aliens who possess dead bodies.

But The Unquiet Dead episode was shown two hours before the watershed - at 7pm on BBC1.

Parents believe the BBC over stepped the boundaries of acceptable broadcasting in the bid to beat ITV1's Ant & Dec in the ratings battle.

The BBC has now warned parents the show is no longer suitable for children under eight years old. And it said older children should watch with parents.

One viewer said his whole family suffered a sleepless night because of the scary scenes, such as the one above.

Dave Edwards, 28, from Liverpool said: "The kids were really shaken up and refused to go to bed"
