THERE are those of us, horribly aware of the cult madness accompanying its revival, who found Doctor Who to be the silliest programme on TV. Its position in the scheduling was just after kiddiwinks hour. And rightly.
It was possible to accept daft papier-mache alien costumes on quite obviously human actors, and it was almost acceptable for contraptions as technologically inept as the Daleks to rule the roost, but to be required to put up with the had acting was intolerable.
None of Dr Who's female assistants would have got past the doorman at RADA on audition day. That was bad enough. But to have to put up with a Zimmerglok from Planet Glurg who laid something on his forehead like one of those old sports car superchargers, and who couldn't have acted his way out of a wet E farm& carrier bug in a monsoon on a Bank Holiday in Djakarta — luvvies — was very depressing indeed.
