DOES Ross Symonds know the way to Logopolis? Could Brian Henderson disappear through a phone booth door? What would Tim Webster do with "the calling card of the most evil genius of the universe?" Could Katrina Lee look sexy travelling on a time machine at a light year a minute?

While our earthbound newsreaders try to make politics and football seem exciting, their competition on ABC-TV soars through the stars and scrambles to victory after victory for Dr Who. Here is an innocent fantasy for all ages but it undergoes a space change tonight.

Very early, Tom Baker's Dr Who dissolves into Peter Davison's Dr Who. Yes, Peter Davison, the young vet of All Creatures Great and Small. I'm told the new series begins with one uneasy episode but that it runs well from tomorrow night.

Tom Baker will be missed. His style had enigmatic gaps to stimulate one's own imagination, That long, red garment suggested a military greatcoat, something a Russian officer might have worn to defeat Napoleon. At the same time, it could suggest a friar's soutane. And the long scarf created a sporting touch, a symbol for a jolly English lad cheering the rugger team.

What was he at heart? Soldier, priest or schoolboy? Add to that the fact that his intellect was six steps ahead of his fellows' and one step ahead of his great enemy, The Master, and you have a clever. mixed-up fellow. One about whom it's possible to write endless stories in your head. Gpd forbid you should ever read the stories of Dr Tom's love life that have invaded my poor 'brain. Goodbye Baker-Who. You'll be remembered as you were last week, standing beside your phone booth on the deck of a Thames barge, red faced and pinch lipped with cold while the evil wraith of The Master gloomed on a bridge above.

Now Peter Davison promises to be a more decent, straight-forward fellow. He carries an almost naive expression and, of all things, a cricket bat. To symbolise what — that he'll give the universe a sporting chance? I don't think I'll be imagining a love life for Dr Peter. But one should be more polite and welcome Davison-Who more warmly. His style just might be the next fashion. It seems to be a spin-off from the movie success of Chariots of Fire and the TV success of Brideshead Revisited (which we should see in June). We're told that the decorative styles of the '20s and '30s are. enjoying a comeback in Britain and. we might get clues from the new Dr Who.

So watch Dr Peter slip into his phone booth and set off to do battle with Castrovalva.

Good heavens, all this about an innocent fantasy. What effect does a cynical fantasy arouse?
