DEVOTEES of the BBC's long-running science fantasy "Doctor Who" will attend the first Scottish convention to celebrate the series in Edinburgh today.

The Doctor Who Appreciation Society is staging the conference for more than 60 members at Edinburgh University and one of the stars of the current series, Matthew Waterhouse, who plays the space and time travelling doctor's young assistant Adric, will head a number of guest speakers,

Writer Terence Dicks, who was script editor or the series for six years and wrote more than 50 paperback novels based on Doctor Who adventures, will attend. Also invited are script writer DonHoughton, the creator of STV's "Take the High Road" and 19-year-old Glaswegian Andrew Smith. the youngest person to write for the series.

"I would hope this will be the forerunner of many more Doctor Who conventions in Scotland," said organiser Mr Gordon Roxburgh.

Mr Roxburgh, 21, from Biggar, has attended every convention organised by the DWAS since the first in 1977.

Todays conference falls on the week marking the screening of the first episode of the programme 18 years ago.

Most of the actors who played the mysterious doctor, Patrick Troughton, John Pertwee and Tom Baker, maintain an interest in the series and the society, as does William Hartnell's widow Mrs Heather Hartnell. It is expected the new doctor, Peter Davison will do so too.
