FORMER Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston is set to star in a £10 million re-make of 60s telly classic The Prisoner.

Eccleston, 42, is "close to agreeing" to play the lead role of Number Six in the six-part Sky One series, according to sources.

An insider revealed: "The Prisoner will feature a host of A-list stars, with Christopher heading the cast.

"He is very keen to take the title role."

Village

In the 1960s version Patrick McGoohan, 78, played a former spy who was kidnapped and taken to a mystery village.

His character had a number of catch phrases including: "I'm not a number, I'm a free man" and: "Be seeing you."

Sky One programme chief Richard Woolfe said: "If Dr Who set the standard, The Prisoner raises the bar.

"It's our biggest drama commission ever and every penny will be evident on screen."

Filming will begin later this year and it will hit the screen in 2007.
