Exterminated! The BBC calls time on deadly Dalek foe

THEY have ruled the galaxy and even learned to climb stairs but there is one deadly enemy the Daleks can never defeat - the director's cut.

After doing battle with 11 Time Lords, the show's bosses have decided it's time the shrieking cyborgs were given a well earned holiday.

Executive producer Steven Moffat said the Dalek's predictability has been their downfall.

'There's a problem with the Daleks,' he said. 'They are the most famous of the Doctor's adversaries and the most frequent, which means they are the most reliably defeatable enemies in the universe.

'They aren't going to make an appearance for a while,' Moffat told the Radio Times magazine. 'We thought it was about time to give them a rest. They have been defeated by the Doctor about 400 times.

'Surely they should just see the Tardis approaching, say, "Oh. It's him again" and trudge away.' The Daleks first made an appearance during the first series of Doctor Who which ran at the end of 1963. Their blood curdling war cry 'exterminate!' forced millions of children behind the sofa.

Antony Wainer, spokesman for the Doctor Who Appreciation Society, said: 'Doctor Who without the Daleks is like Wimbledon without the strawberries and cream - they go hand in hand. I just can't imagine it without them.'
