Maryland Public Television's recently completed 17-day spring fund-raiser generated about 5 percent more membership pledges than last year's March push.

Officials say 9,335 members pledged a total of $598,913, which works out to about a $63 average pledge. And it was supporters who call themselves "Whovians" who were responsible for fully 20 percent of the drive total.

These are the folks who are fans of the "Dr. Who" science fiction series (at 11 p.m. Saturdays on channels 22 and 67), and this drive featured a marathon screening of episodes last week that included a studio appearance by Tom Baker, the actor who portrayed "Dr. Who" number four.

More than 1,600 viewers that night pledged a total of more than $121,000.

But a look at the next couple most lucrative program blocks shows the apparent wide diversity of interests of public TV viewers.

Last Sunday's mixed music block — "In the Hank Williams Tradition," "Julie Andrews in Concert" and "Rogers and Hammerstein: The Sound of American Music" — drew almost $85,000 from more than 1,300 viewers. The previous Sunday's block —Maryland-oriented cooking shows, plus a documentary on Ireland and the first airing of the "Rogers and Hammerstein" show —drew more than $77,000 from almost 1,300 viewers.
