[edit]

LAST week, it was announced that Peter Capaldi's tenure as the Doctor would be coming to an end at the end of the year with the 2017 Christmas special being the final one.

This didn't come as a shock with the introduction of new writer Chris Chibnall who I thought would want to start his run as the head writer with a completely fresh start.

Capaldi will begin his third and final series as the Time Lord this spring and will look to go out on a high.

Despite people not being too keen on his performances in the lead role of the sci-fi show, I think there was an improvement given time but it is the right time to put someone new in the part and see how they fare.

When Capaldi joined the series they attempted to make the Doctor almost more cold and a lot angrier and that kind of took away from the fun of the character. They did that years ago with Colin Baker and that didn't work out too well back then. Yes the Doctor may need that a bit in his personality when the situation gets serious but it should not take away from the fun and madness of the time travelling character.

They did attempt to change this though in the second series to feature Capaldi and you could see the difference in the way it was played and overall I think he did a decent job.

The other question with a new start is will incoming co-star Pearl Mackie be joining Capaldi in leaving after just one series as new companion Bill Potts or will she stay on with the new Doctor?

Time will tell, but the focus now turns to who will take up the role...
