[edit]

NICHOLAS Courtney, who played Doctor Who's longest running companion, has died of cancer at 81.

Nicholas starred as Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart alongside five doctors - from Patrick Troughton to Peter Davison.

His most frequent appearances were during Jon Pertwee's incarnation as the third Doctor stuck on Earth.

When the series returned in 2005 after almost a decade off air, the Brigadier was referred to as being "stuck in Peru". But Courtney returned to the role in spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Before playing the Brigadier, Courtney starred with first Doctor William Hartnell in 1965 as a space agent.

He lived in London with second wife Karen and children Philip and Bella.

Former Doctor Tom Baker described him as a "wonderful companion", writing on his website: "Of all the characters in there is no doubt he was the most loved by the fans."
