COLUMBUS, Ga. — British actor Patrick Troughton, best known for his role as the time-travelling hero in the cult TV show Dr Who, has died of an apparent heart attack. He was 67.

Troughton was at the Hilton Hotel in Columbus, about 200 kilometres southwest of Atlanta, when he was stricken. He was in the city to attend a meeting of the Middle Georgia Society for Fantasy and Science Fiction.

Hotel Manager David Sanderson said he was called to Troughton's room and when he arrived, the actor was unconscious.

He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Troughton played Dr. Who in the BBC series in the 1960s.

He was the second actor to play the part, succeeding Witham Hartnell and being replaced by Jon Pertwee.

The series has become a cult show among young viewers In the United States and is still shown in dozens of countries worldwide.

Troughton also had a long career in movies and the theatre.

Most notably, be appeared in Laurence Olivier's film version of Hamlet, and he co-starred with Gregory Peck in The Omen.
