[edit]

A LITTLE-KNOWN star of The White Queen has emerged as a fans' favourite to take over the coveted role of Doctor Who.

Aficionados are convinced that Welshman Aneurin Barnard, who plays a brooding Richard III in the BBC1 period drama, has the right charisma' and enigmatic feel' to play the twelfth incarnation of the Time Lord.

BBC bosses will announce who is taking over the role from Matt Smith in a live TV special tonight.

Amid the mounting speculation among fans and bookies, Sebastian J Brook, editor of Doctor Who Online, said: Aneurin is being mentioned. There has been a flurry of bets on him lately and that would be perfect casting.

He has got the youth for the show but he also has got a very enigmatic feel about him.'

The 26-year-old also recently starred opposite former Doctor Who assistant Karen Gillan in the BBC drama We'll Take Manhattan.

But he was just one of a long list of names being linked to the role yesterday. Emerging as an eleventh-hour contender was Daniel Rigby, who won a Bafta for his role as Eric Morecambe in the drama Eric & Ernie.

The bookies' favourites, however, are The Thick of It star Peter Capaldi and Skyfall actor Rory Kinnear. Colin Morgan, former star of Merlin, Dominic Cooper and Ben Miles have also been suggested.

BBC bosses last night declined to comment. One insider said: All I will say is it's someone everyone has heard of.'

Doctor Who, which began in November 1963, is preparing to mark its 50th anniversary and many commentators believe the time is right to cast a woman, or a black or Asian actor in the role. But Brook last night said he did not believe there was an appetite for a woman Time Lord: He has always been a man. It doesn't matter what colour the actor.'

Tonight's special is at 7pm on BBC1.
