[edit]

In the original U.K. Queer as Folk, out writer-creator Russell T. Davies hinted at a love for the legendary British science fiction TV series Doctor Who. Those hints bore fruit--Davies is now head writer for the revived series, which is debuting on the Sci Fi channel.

Doctor Who (Christopher Eccleston) is the last of the Time Lords--aliens that travel through time and space, serving as observers and, occasionally, guardians.

In this 13-episode season, the Doctor is joined by a spunky sidekick, Rose (Billie Piper), whom he saves from murderous plastic store mannequins. Yes, murderous mannequins. Davies and company have whipped up many new, bizarre plots and villains--including a bitchy woman so stretched by plastic surgery that she's little more than a veiny canvas with eyes and a mouth--yet, for devotees, have brought back the Doctor's most dreaded foes, the Daleks.

They have also significantly upped the production values--no more "wobbly sets," as Eccleston has remarked--while queerness peppers the series, including out actor Simon Callow as author Charles Dickens in an episode involving zombies. The Doctor is once again "in."
