HERE'S A GUIDE to science fiction in the Milwaukee area. Most of the information comes courtesy of Nostrum, a 2-month-old newsletter that acts as a clearing house for science fiction and related activities. For information on the magazine. write Nostrum. P O. Box 1505. Milwaukee, 53201-1505.

STORES

The national chain stores. B Dalton and Waldenbook, In most major malls. Waldenbook has a science fiction club in which members receive a newsletter and discount on books.

Smaller stores with good selections include Booked Solid, 7032 W. Greenfield Ave.; the Schwartz shops In the Grand Avenue mall. Whitefish Bay and Brookfield, and Webster's on Downer Ave

A small shop with a great selection of science fiction magazines and books, Including Dr. Who material, Is The Turning Page, 2452 N. Murray Ave.

For used books there's the Renaissance at 834 N. Plankinton Ave.

But science fiction fans all point to the dealer's rooms at conventions like X-Con as the best place to find merchants who deal only in science fiction and can provide rare items and information on hard-10-find books

MAGAZINES

You may have to search to find some of these, but here's a list of some: pulp-style magazines, with fact and fiction, Include Amazing Stories, Analog and Isaac Asimov's. Slicker magazines Include Starlog, Omni and The Twilight Zone. Magazines about science fiction publishing Include Locus, Thrust, Science Fiction Chronicle and Science Fiction Review.

CONVENTIONS

X-Con will be held tonight through Sunday at the Olympia Resort in Oconomowoc.
