I think Charles Catchpole has missed the point about the new series of Dr. Who (Sept 11).

He claims that Dr Who has abandoned "attempts to thrill and chill" its audience and has turned into a "space-age pantomime."

What he seems to have forgotten is that Dr Who's strongest quality has always been its humorous and self-mocking aspect.

Behind the monsters that stalked across the screen was always that sense of the ludicrous that served to ensure its young audience that these creatures were too absurd to take seriously.

It was postponed for the 18 months because the last series began to ignore this lighthearted aspect and to play it for horror alone, to the detriment of the show.

We've all become accustomed to gruesome spectacles on the TV screen, so the fact that the present production team have chosen to promote the funny side of the show is all too it's good.
