He's back on board the TARDIS as Nardole in Doctor Who — we managed to get some brief messages through time and space with Matt Lucas ahead of series 10 landing on BBC One.

Time for another comedian in the TARDIS... Did you get a chance to catch up with Catherine Tate for any tips?

I haven't, actually. I did bump into Frank Skinner at a screening of The Return of Doctor Mysterio. I know he had a great time on the show. It's been an amazing experience —gruelling and challenging, not least because of the Cardiff weather! — but I've really loved it.

Because, as always with these things, the fanbase can be a bit... vocal.

They can. Oh yes.

But that's something that you seem to deal with quite well on Twitter...?

Some people prove their love of the show by displaying how much they hate it, but the vast majority of fans are just pleased it's coming back after such a long hiatus and are looking forward to Peter's last season.

Let's talk about gay actors as companions — you're one of only three men, four if you count Mike Yates as a companion, in nearly 60 years. We're not sure about Kamelion...

I heard K-9 was open-minded...

Does Nardole, as a robot, identify with any particular sexuality or gender — is that a discussion that was had?

No offence but we're actually pretty busy saving the world.

Kamelion, K-9, Nardole — who's best and why?

Everyone loves dogs. I'm going with K-9.

Nardole is referred to as the 'TARDIS butler' — discuss.

The Doctor needs looking after. Sometimes he's his own worst enemy. As far as Nardole is concerned, he can destroy a dozen Daleks, but he still can't make a decent cup of tea.

What are your thoughts on the current discussion about the next Doctor being a woman or gay man?

It doesn't bother me remotely what gender or race or sexuality any performer is. I trust Chris Chibnall to find someone brilliant. I'm not worried. I've loved every Doctor.

Were you always a Doctor Who fan? Before I was a fan of it, I was scared of it. I remember Tom Baker's regeneration into Peter Davison as being one of the most exciting, most anticipated TV events of my life.

It particularly resonates with a gay fanbase — have you any idea why? Well, growing up I recall almost every show I watched featuring a straight love story. Doctor Who — like Star Trek — was less bothered about all of that. And the Doctor is a loner. And gay men growing up in the closet may feel lonely too. I know I haven't gone particularly deep with this. I am sure there are people who can provide much more considered responses. Those are my quick thoughts. Also, the Cybermen are pretty ripped.
