[edit]

Jon Pertwee, 77, who played the title character in Britain's classic science fiction television series "Dr. Who," has died. The BBC, which announced his death, did not report the date, cause or location of his death.

His 60-year entertainment career included work in radio, films and cabaret. This was despite the inauspicious beginning of having been thrown out Of drama school as a young man and told he had no future as an actor.

Mr. Pertwee played the eccentric time traveler known as The Doctor on BBC-TV from 1970 to 1974 and later saw the episodes run on PBS. He found it difficult to shake off the Doctor image but never minded being typecast. "I'm very much afraid to say it, but I'm rather a cult figure," he said recently.
