Jon Pertwee, a longtime British actor best known for his role<br />
in the British TV series "Dr.<br />
Who," died May 20 of undisclosed<br />
causes in New York. He was 76.<br />
<br />
Born into a theatrical family<br />
in 1919, Pertwee worked in all<br />
facets of British entertainment<br />
including radio and telvision.<br />
<br />
In his early years, critics compared him to Danny Kaye after<br />
he became a regular in the popular "Carry On" films.<br />
<br />
In 1969, he joined the cast of<br />
"Dr. Who," a long-running British TV series. Pertwee left the<br />
show in 1974 and appeared in<br />
several musicals on London's<br />
West End including "Irene."<br />
<br />
He later appeared on the<br />
BBC children's series "Worzel<br />
Gummidge" for four years.<br />
<br />
Pertwee also appeared in several feature films including<br />
"The House That Dripped<br />
Blood" and "One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing," as well as the<br />
A&E production of "The Curious Case of Santa Claus" and<br />
the 25th anniversary special of<br />
"[[broadwcast:The Five Doctors|The Five Doctors]]."<br />

He most recently appeared in<br />
the one-man show "Who Is Jon<br />
Pertwee?"<br />
<br />
Pertwee is survived by his<br />
wife, a son and a daughter.<br />
