[edit]

The B.B.C. is footing the bill for some very psychedelic-sounding electronic entertainment at the centenary conversazione of the Institute of Electrical Engineers in the Festival Hall on Wednesday. The B.B.C. Radiophonic Workshop (Dr. Who and all that) will be bringing their sound equipment —including their latest Deleware synthesizer--from Maida Vale, and special lighting has been borrowed from Television Centre and else Isere.

Among the sound-pored lighting equipment on display will be two (low-powered) laser beams which dance to the music. Desmond Briscoe, Radiophonic Workshop's organizer, is providing tapes and films to show off the capabilities of all the machinery, and Delia Derbyshire, one of his composers, is writing a special piece of electronic music for the occasion, called I.E.E. 100.

The event orginated in the fact that James Redmond, the B.B.C.'s director of engineering, is a fellow of the Institute. Briscoe is presenting his wonders as in an Edwardian playbill--" short items, very humourous". The Whole affair will be recorded.
