Leo's Dr Who birthday party — a last hurrah for Blairs at Chequers

[edit]

IT WAS perhaps the last hurrah for the Blairs at Chequers. Last weekend saw a Dr Who-themed birthday party for Leo Blair, who turned seven on 20 May. All of the young guests at the party dressed up for the occasion but rumours that the grownups also dusted off the fancy dress were vigorously denied by Cherie Blair's entourage.

"Only the children dressed up," a Downing Street spokesman tells me. "The adult guests stayed in civilian clothing." Terminology the Timelord would no doubt approve of.

The question is: did anyone dress up as a dalek and go around saying "Exterminate Gordon, exterminate Gordon"?

Dr Who is very on-trend at the moment. At the Chelsea Flower Show this week, the Queen pointed out a Tardis in one of the garden designs and asked what it was doing there.

The birthday party very likely marks the end of festivities at Chequers for some time as Gordon Brown, who never visited Dorneywood, the grace-and-favour country home usually reserved for the chancellor, is unlikely to throw big parties there.

Leo, who was born in 2000, three years into his dad's premiership, has never known anything other than weekends at Chequers. The first baby born to a serving prime minister in 150 years, Leo has had an interesting time. He was at the centre of the long-running row over MMR jabs when Downing Street refused to confirm or deny that he had been given the controversial jab. Then, last year The Sun revealed a plot by the vigilante fathers' rights group to kidnap him.

Get ready for a much quieter life, Leo.
