DOCTOR Who fans who have been waiting who knows how long for the 22nd series to come to Australia need hold their breath no longer.
Production was delayed 18 months in Britain because of story lines which featured too much aggro for the BBC's liking.
BBC Program Controller Michael Grade said the scripts were "relying too much on straightforward on-the-nose violence" and the producers needed to "re-think the shape of the program".
Comet
Whatever shape they finished in they're here now with Doctor Who No 6, Colin Baker, who was introduced in the final serial of the last series.
The first adventure this series (ABC Monday, 6.35prn) is Attack Of The Cybermen which has Halley's Comet as a central piece in the story line.
The doctor picks up an inter-galactic distress call from Earth and goes to investigate with companion Peri (Nicola Bryant) who's been around since 1983.
He comes up against former foe Commander Lytton, an alien soldier, who has gone into the robbery business.
Peri is a bit worried about the doc, who she thinks is unstable since his regeneration. (That's how Who producers introduce a new doctor — kill the old one off and bring him back (regenerate) as a new face).
Not so, he tells her, adding modestly: "I'm a timelord, a man of science, temperament and passion."
Colin Baker says he's always been a Who fan and was thrilled to get the part.
"It offers the most tremendous scope to an actor and it really is in a category of its own.
"Hamlet talked about plays being 'tragical-comical-historical-pastoral' well, if you add 'scientifical', you've got Doctor Who," he said.
