Meet Doctor Number 7
Scottish actor Sylvester McCoy, the seventh and newest Doctor, will appear at the Urbana Civic Center Thursday, July 9 from 3 to 10 p.m. when the "Doctor Who Celebration and Tour" exhibition comes to town.
McCoy will be hosting questions and answer sessions and signing autographs at each session. Several documentaries on the series and the tour will be shown throughout the day and a new range of "Doctor Who" merchandise will be sold.
While McCoy will be the first Scottish "Doctor" in the history of the 24-year old program, he has already decided that "he will not be wearing a kilt." He says he will be trying to put the zany inquisitiveness into the role in the manner of television's mad professors Like David Bellamy and Magnus Pike.
McCoy's career has spanned both dramatic and comedy roles in theater, television and feature film productions. Two plays have been especially written for him — Satie Day Night and Buster's Last Stand, and he appeared with Bonnie Langford (Melanie in Dr. Who) in the West End production of The Pirates of Penzance. His film credits include a leading role in the forthcoming Three Kinds of Heat.
Visitors to the 48-foot long mobile exhibition enter through a TARDIS —the Doctor's time travelling craft forever locked into the shape of an old English police call box. Featured are the show's famous monsters and villians with special effect animation, and a mock-up of the ship's control panel. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling 818-785-6662. Price per person is $7.50.
Dr. Who is the longest running science fiction show in television history. It premiered in the U.S. in 1977, and has been aired over WILL-TV, Channel 12 weekdays at 10 p.m. since March, 1982.
Colin Baker Series on Channel 12
The television series of Dr. Who, featuring Colin Baker, the sixth Doctor, has been made into a film, The Trial of A Time Doctor. It will be aired for the first time over WILL-TV, Channel 12 this month. The four-part series will air Saturdays, at 10:30 p.m. beginning on July 11.
