Much as I would like to add my compliments to the BBC's Special Effects Department while there holding their [[Plastic fiends|exhibition at the Science Museum]], the truth is that lately they have twice muffled essential bits of make-believe.  

Dr. Who (B.B.C. 1) is back with [[broadwcast:The Three Doctors|an adventure]] that is surely the final grand slam, since it recalls not only those splendid inter-galactic figures the Lords of Time but both previous incarnations of Dr. Who himself (William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton) plus the present incumbent, Such epic mobilisation is considered necessary to meet the threats of some infinitely remote malevolence which is sucking energy from the universe hole in the sky.  

But how does this unspeakable enemy manifest itself to mortals on planet Earth?  Itsy-bitsy little coloured shapes slow the round the door-frame, a luckless victim is periodically magicked away with a few simple over-contrast effects, and as a fearful climax an actual Thing materiases, looking like for all the lworld like Papageno, the-bird catcher of "The Magic Flute," only cuddlier.

With the visual FX dragging it's only too easy to start noticing flaws in the structure elsewhere.  What is this British army unit commanded by the Brigadier with a sergeant as a second in command?  And after about a dozen different assaults now from things from beyond times and space, even the boniest-headed Brig. Wouldn't still be itching to open fire on anything that moved, would he?
