[edit]

NABIL SHABAN, the disabled Doctor Who star who performs on stage from his wheelchair, has won an Arts Council grant to study fencing for the lead role in a production of Hamlet.

The actor was invited to appear in the version to be staged by the Cleveland Independent Theatre next year.

"Originally they were looking at me to play the part and hadn't made any decision about how to handle the duelling scene but agreed when I said I was interested in doing it myself." said Shaban.

The Arts Council provided £500 for Shaban to start lessons with fencing teacher Barry Mills, who himself practices from a wheelchair.

Shaban's first experience of sword fighting was ten years ago when he was coached to use the foil. This time he will learn with a sabre instead.

"Barry said I should use a sabre because it has more dramatic effect on stage and allows more arm movement," explained Shahan.

In an effort to overcome the limitations of fighting in a sitting position. the actor is seriously considering replacing his hand operated chair with an electric version if the theatre company agree to this.

Shaban is currently starring in another royal lead role, as Haile Selassie in the Royal Court production, The Emperor. Rehearsals for Hamlet start in February and the play opens in Stockton before a planned tour until April.
