Nerds bring convention to Kalahari

LAKE DELTON — When hearing the bangs of samurai engaged in battle at the Kalahari next week, fear not. It's most likely the sound of "nerds" having a good time.
The seventh Daisho Con will be held at Kalahari Nov. 21-23. A daisho is the smaller sword used by samurai. True to its name, Daisho Con started as an anime and gaming convention. Started by three University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point students, the convention grew to encompass many aspects of nerd culture.
Most people on the Daisho Con staff are related to Point in some manner, but anyone who wants to put in the time is welcome, said Meagan Hoffmann, one of the event co-directors. The convention started in Stevens Point, but after the hotel it used closed down it moved to the Kalahari.
Last year's event saw over 2,000 people attend and this year's pre-event sale of tickets have moved at an even faster pace.
Live music will be on hand, including a Dr. Who band — where the members dress like and sing about Dr. Who. A 24-hour video game room will be available free for all to play. Tournaments for the games will be organized.
A wide range of board games will be available along with Dungeons & Dragons.
"There's so many different card games and regular board games;' Hoffman said. "Not the ones you'd find at Walmart like Sorry!, but board games with figures and dice rolling and carding drawing — lots of variety to try out and free demos!"
Vendors will be on hand to offer anything a geek may crave such as comics, science fiction swag or original artwork. Many of the artists will do commissions, Hoffmann said.
Guests will include many anime voice actors. DJs will keep the dance floor moving and a stunt group will give a performance. The event is all ages — though certain late night parts will have age restrictions — and everyone is welcome to attend.
"I'd like to promote the fact that we are a very open community," Hoffmann said. "There has been a lot of contention — issues at other conventions not considered safe. We're very family friendly!'
