The Doctor sees in 2022 with some new friends - and some old enemies

After battling the Flux in last year's epic six-part series, the Doctor, Yaz and Dan are back for another action-packed adventure in a New Year's Day special - as the gang face the Daleks.

Pauline McLynn guest stars in the episode, which also sees Aisling Bea play Sarah, who runs a storage firm, and Adjani Salmon play customer Nick, whose New Year's Eve doesn't go according to plan...

This is the first of three Doctor Who specials being shown in 2022, with the other episodes airing later in the year and featuring Jodie Whittaker's final performance. TV&Satellite Week spoke to Whittaker, 39, to find out more...

Can you set the scene for the New Year's Day special for us?

The jeopardy level is at 10 continually, because not only are the Doctor, Yaz and Dan stuck in a time loop, we're stuck in it with the Daleks - and for the Doctor, that's a nightmare.

What can you tell us about the episode?

It's really funny. There are a lot of farce elements - a lot of opening doors and not being where you think you're going to be!

What was it like working with Aisling Bea and Adjani Salmon?

It was brilliant - sometimes we can have eight or nine lead characters in one scene, but this was really intimate. Aisling and Adjani were amazing; they've got such good chemistry.

Pauline McLynn also features. What can you tell us about her role?

Her involvement came afterwards, so I didn't have any interaction with her, which was rubbish for me! She plays a really important part, but we didn't get to physically be together.

You've finished filming the show, but your final episode won't air until autumn.

Is that a strange feeling? It's nice. It's a bit of an easier way to rip the Band-Aid off
