DR. WHO orbited into a new conflict yesterday—with Mrs. Mary Whitehouse.
She slapped her own X certificate on B.B.C. TV's. popular doctor (that's him above ; actor Tom Baker) and his unearthy foes.
The Saturday serial is giving nightmares to under-sevens and even making them wet the bed, she claimed. Mrs. Whitehouse, secretary of the Viewers' and Listeners' Association, said the programme was screened too early in the evening.
Hero
She was answering a claim by a top B.B.C. official that Dr. Who taught children about courage, morality and humour.
Mr. Shaun Sutton, B.B.C. T.V.'s drama chief, told a Manchester University symposium on broadcasting : "Courage must be a basic ingredient of Dr. Who. It is expected that the hero will be brave and this is right."
But Mrs. Whitehouse said doctors told her that the programme could cause nightmares and bedwetting among under-sevens.
