LETTER OF THE WEEK

On another planet with you

You can forget your Jane Eyres and Mr Rochesters, your Heathcliffs and Cathys, your Tristans and Isoldes, even your Romeos and Juliets - give me the Doctor and Rose Tyler every time! In Doctor Who (BBC1) we had two people who loved each other, mind, body and soul, but always had too much on their plates ever to fully express their feelings, and weren't destined to be together anyway - the perfect tragic romance. And this couple didn't have to be climbing all over each other for us to see their longing: one exchanged glance would say it all.

Yes, it was sci-fi but, thanks to the sensitive performances of David Tennant and Billie Piper, it was also the most heartrending, soulful, beautifully played-down love story I've ever seen. And yes, I had a good blub at the end.

Doctor Who is not only back, revamped and revived, but it's also a triumph of British telly at its absolute best. Come back soon, Billie Piper, we'll miss you terribly.

Into a new dimension

Having watched Doctor Who all through its early years and then on and off as I grew up, I'm now viewing with my nine-year-old son. Over the years I've been scared, shocked, amused, tense - but never tearful.

That is, until that final episode (8 July). Roll on Christmas!

We were flooded with letters from readers who were moved by the Doctor Who finale.

... I may be way off here, but the Doctor wasn't that surprised by the idea Rose might be pregnant, was he?
