DOCTOR Who star Peter Capaldi says he had to quit the role as he was struggling to keep it interesting.

Reflecting on his time in a show he loves, but leaves this year, he says: "I've never done anything for any length of time.

"Even [political comedy] The Thick of It was only 20 episodes over four years. I'll have done 40 episodes of Doctor Who.

"I don't think if I stayed on I'd be able to think of another way to say, 'This could be the end of civilisation as we know it'.

"I've always gone from one job to the other and seen what was around the corner:'

The series returns to BBC1 this Saturday and, as our new pics show, there will be a third main element alongside Capaldi and new companion Bill (Pearl Mackie), with Matt Lucas back as Nardole.

Mackie told Radio Times that series 10 is "a lot to do with the relationship between the Doctor, Bill and Nardole. They're all very different". Nardole also has a "secret mission" with the Doctor in opener The Pilot.

Capaldi isn't the only one leaving Doctor Who this year, with show boss Steven Moffat being replaced by Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall.

Moffat insists the person in charge has to be a superfan. "I left a better-paid job to do it, Chris is being offered everything in the world. So what's going to make you do it when you have other options? You're going to do it because you love it.

"I'm writing a Doctor Who script at the moment and finding it fiendishly difficult.

"You've got to have that love for it, the brain of a diehard professional and heart of an absolute fanboy to do it:'

It may still make him a few quid if a certain enemy returns. Moffat reveals: "I'd be incredibly excited to watch a Doctor Who story where he fights the Weeping Angels and I don't have a clue what's going to happen.

"I do have ownership of them but I'd never, ever prevent Doctor Who from using them. I'd say, 'Yes, you must' then accept my vast cheque:'
