[edit]

Few of the Doctor's time-travelling companions command such instant respect as Brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, who returns to screens next week after a 20-year absence.

The commanding officer of the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (UNIT), "the Brigadier" saved the world from menaces ranging from Autons to Zygons after joining Patrick Troughton as a Doctor Who sidekick in 1968.

The Brigadier's The Face The Brigadier "shoot first, ask questions later" attitude sometimes conflicted with the Doctor's more peaceable instincts but his unflappable heroism was never in doubt.

Played once again by Nicholas Courtney, 78, he returns to help another old friend battle the Sontarans in spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures (BBC One, Monday). The Brigadier, now a knight, is a little changed. "He's got fatter," jokes Courtney. "But he's a very decent chap, the Brig. Very trustworthy."
