Stars and fans gather for Comic Con at NEC
GEEK was the word as sci-fi fans gathered for a Dalektric event in Birmingham yesterday.
The force was definitely with fans who star trekked to the MCM Comic Con and Memorabilia convention, which also runs at the NEC today.
And there were plenty of big names from the silver screen and TV present to meet their adoring public.
Steel-toothed James Bond villain Jaws and Red Dwarf fashion victim The Cat were among those appearing in the city for the extravaganza.
Hailed as the biggest collectors' event in Britain, other celebs present included actors from Quadrophenia and popular soap EastEnders. But it was classic BBC show Dr Who, celebrating its 50th anniversary, which stole the show.
Fans got to meet characters and creators ahead of the birthday celebrations.
The Dr Who line-up included Katy Manning, who played the Doctor's companion Jo Grant, Frances Barber, the face of Madame Kovarian, and Cyberleader David Banks.
James Bond actors attending included Richard Kiel, the man who got his teeth stuck into the role of Jaws in The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker.
And it was a Red Dwarf reunion with Chris Barrie, who plays Arnold Rimmer, Hattie Hayridge, the face of Holly, Danny John-Jules, cast as The Cat, and Robert Llewellyn, better known as Kryten.
Birmingham-born pop star and actress Toyah Willcox, Monkey in Quadrophenia, was joined by fellow cast members Phil Daniels, who took the starring part of Jimmy, and Daniel Peacock - Danny in the cult classic, to celebrate the ultimate mod movie, based on The Who's 1973 rock opera. Also there was Primeval star Hannah Spearritt who joined the cast in the role of lizard-loving zookeeper Abby Maitland following musical fame in S Club 7. A spokesman for the event said: "This weekend in Birmingham wraps up a record-breaking 2013 by bringing a holiday helping of geeky goodness back to the Midlands."
This is the first time both the Comic and Memorabilia conventions have joined forces in Birmingham.
