[edit]

NEW YORK -- USA Network, the cable channel jointly owned by Paramount Communications Inc. and MCA Inc., is expected to announce today that it has agreed to buy the Sci-Fi Channel cable network. Terms weren't disclosed. The Sci-Fi channel, based in Boca Raton, Fla., has been seeking financial backers since its creation in 1989 by Chairman Mitch Rubenstein. The network is expected to be launched later this year in cable systems serving 10 million subscribers. USA's parent companies are expected to invest as much as $75 million to get the network off the ground. With its powerful new owners, the channel will have access to two vast libraries of science fiction programming. Paramount's library includes the original "Star Trek" series, as well as the current "Star Trek: The Next Generation" syndicated show and all the "Star Trek" films. MCA's Universal Pictures owns the classic horror movies of the 1930s, with stars such as Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff, as well as television series such as "Battlestar Galactica." MCA is owned by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. of Japan. Aside from programming, Sci-Fi will reap handsome promotional benefits from teaming with the USA network, one of the most successful networks on cable. The Sci-Fi Channel, which lacks any recognition with viewers, could be promoted throughout the day on USA, reaching that network's nearly 58 million homes. The Sci-Fi channel has also landed the original Flash Gordon series, all 1,225 episodes of the original "Dark Shadows," series, and the British sci-fi series "Doctor Who," whose cult fans are known as Whovians.
