TELEVISION'S Space thriller "Dr. Who "—one of the most popular shows for children—is described today as "compulsive nonsense."

In a survey of children's television, York University lecturer Mr. Edward Blishen sharply attacks many favourite programmes.

He says that too many shows are merely "a junior version of the unexacting, time-killing light entertainment provided for adults."

Writing in Where ?—journal of the Advisory Centre for Education Mr. Blishen praises the BBC for its serial s, such as " Lorna Doone " and " The Old Curiosity Shop."

But of other programmes he asks: "Why so much beat and embarrassing slapstick ?"
