[edit]

And now, the end is near, and so we face the final curtain of recent TV life as we have known it with a weekend of spectacular endings.

First farewell goes to Doctor Who, with an epic battle on a truly intergalactic scale. There'll be tears before bedtime in my house on Saturday, that's for sure. I'll just have to stock up on tissues so that my daughter's got enough to keep passing them, erm, My Way, whenever it all gets too much. But how well will the series travel into the future given the black hole that's been opened up by the departure of Billie Piper? As well, one can only hope, as David Tennant did in stepping into the daunting shoes of Christopher Eccleston. Take a well-deserved bow, Mr T. (Don't miss the behind-the-scenes photos he took especially for RT of the final episode — see page 8.)

As if that wasn't enough, it's also goodbye to that protracted session of national nail-biting, otherwise known as the World Cup. As we witness the end of a second epic battle in two days, topics of conversation will, once again, be reduced to the weather and, well, that's about it until the start of the new football season. Chins up, everyone; only four weeks to go ...
