PICK OF THE DAY

Doctor Who 6.15prn BBC1, BBC HD

The Doctor and Amy are settling nicely into their intergalactic partnership in the second episode of the new series as they land on a country made from steel - Starship UK.

At first glance its inhabitants look normal enough, until we see a classroom full of frightened children, who are being taught by an automated face in a box (a Smiler, who will scare the living daylights out of any adult who was ever traumatised by the sight of a ventriloquist's dummy, whether Titch and Quackers or the evil one that possessed Michael Redgrave in Dead of Night).

Doctor Who's special effects wizards were still putting the final touches to the episode as we went to press, so preview DVDs were unavailable. But we are promised a dark and frightening adventure as the Doctor and his companion (Matt Smith and Karen Gillan) stare deep into Starship UK - and don't like what they see. AG

Viewing figures figures (in millions) for actors' first full episodes as the Doctor:

William Hartnell (1963) 4.4

Patrick Troughton ('66) 7.9

Jon Pertwee ('70) 8.4

Tom Baker (74) 10.8

Peter Davison ('82) 9.1

Colin Baker ('84) 7.6

Sylvester McCoy ('87) 5.1

Paul McGann ('96) 9.1

Christopher Eccleston (2005) 10.8

David Tennant ('05) 9.8

Matt Smith (10) ???

SONIC BOON

Can the Doctor's handy screwdriver help him unlock a future mystery?
