[edit]

The arrival of the 13th Doctor on BBC1 tonight marks an intergalactic milestone in Whovian history. No spoilers here (I will review it next week), but also no surprise that fragile Twitter egos enraged by a female Doctor should be crushed when they see how well Jodie Whittaker wears the role (and its practical new costume).

Yet for all the flurry around its "non-traditional" casting, a new Doctor is as traditional a television event as you can get in 2018, a vestige of the days when a household, maybe a country, could unite around a TV set, children hiding behind the sofa as their ancestors' ancestors did in the age of Hartnell or Baker. Radical, yes, but cosy, too: a paradigm shifted in the comforting embrace of the BBC.
