The most famous, newly famous Doctor yet

[edit]

Matt Smith is possibly the most famous newly-famous actor on telly right now, and the one bearing the highest expectations on his shoulders: taking over from the hugely popular David Tennant as Doctor Who could make or break both the show and the performer, and no doubt his first appearance, on Saturday, pulled in big audiences keen to see how he would fare.

Based on his first showing, then, fans of the series needn't worry: Smith, at first disconcertingly young, seems entirely comfortable in the role, a touch too excitable and lacking Tennant's insouciance, but otherwise quite funny, with the right blend of madness and glee.

It's just as well he's so happy to do it, since he had to throw himself lustily into a typically ridiculous, barely-comprehensible plot: a crack in a little girl's bedroom turns out to be, wouldn't you know it, a crack in the spacetime continuum, and an angry alien race are peering through it threatening to incinerate the earth unless they return an escaped prisoner to them.

I know, I know, it's hardly NASA-approved, but I'm guessing nobody watches Dr Who (even the Tardis and the credits have been regenerated here) for scientific accuracy.

It's family teatime entertainment, and if BBC can fix those awful special effects, it still looks like it has a future.
