OTHER CHOICES:

"Doctor Who," 8 p.m., Channel 47. The original series was terribly British. It had little money, few special effects and lots of dry wit.

Now it's revived as a movie that's ... well, extremely American.

The Brits still produced this, but they served their American partners. They added lights, smoke and noise. There are chases, transformations and explosions.

Still, an Englishman has the title role. "The Doctor is very important to the people of England," said producer Jo Wright.

This starts with the old Doctor (Sylvester McCoy), who turns into a new one (Paul McGann).

"Paul loves this character ...," said producer Philip Segal. "Unless you have the right sense of ... whimsy and fun, it's a very difficult character to play."

Daphne Ashbrook plays a typical American overachiever — a beautiful, opera-loving heart surgeon. Eric Roberts plays a typical villain, lusting for power.

If you like spectacle, you'll love this. If you like "Doctor Who" ... well, move to England, which has more wit and less whoosh.
