An out-of-court settlement for $192,500 has ended a suit against WOSU filed by Time-Life Inc. Time-Life claimed that WOSU aired and never paid for over $450,000 worth of films and programs.

Time-Life claimed that the television station entered into 11 contracts for films and programs. Of the 11 contracts, only two were signed by Time-Life and WOSU representatives. The two signed contracts totaled $160,830.

One of the two contracts was signed by Edward Q. Moulton, chancellor of The Ohio Board of Regents, and dated April 1978 with the final installment payment due in October 1979. Court of Claims Judge Gerald A. Baynes ruled that in this case the statute of limitations of two years had already passed before Time-Life filed suit.

Time-Life claimed WOSU aired "Dr. Who," "Dave Allen At Large," "Monty Python's Flying Circus" and "Wodehouse Playhouse," among others, without paying appropriate license fees.

The settlement, which was reached June 7, was a "compromise to reach middle ground," Larry Thompson, special assistant to OSU President Edward H. Jennings, said. Thompson said both parties are satisfied with the agreement.

OSU attorney Robert Tongren did not want to discuss the specifics involved in reaching the settlement, but said that it was an agreement which both parties thought was fair.
