NO ONE can doubt that more fathers than children are looking forward to the return of Dr Who. There's the appeal of nostalgia, and then there's the appeal of Billie Piper.
She's being stalked by paparazzi and chased by fans who are far more interested in her than Christopher Eccleston, the nominal star of the show.
Perhaps she should grit her teeth and enjoy it while it lasts. In the Seventies Britain witnessed the spooky phenomenon of the disappearing Tardis girls. Once they had been cast as the Doctor's assistant, their careers were over. Lalla Ward, who played alongside and indeed married Tom Baker, complained that she was typecast as "Time Lord's floozy" and was virtually unemployable.
Her marriage to Baker didn't work out. Ms Ward is now married to Professor Richard Dawkins, Britain's greatest atheist, who spends his days battling the fundamentalists who want to ban plays, TV programmes and books and then prosecute us for inciting religious hatred when we criticise them.
For a second time, she is at the side of a brave scientist as he battles the dark forces which threaten our society.
