TUNBRIDGE Wells' very own Time Lord, Tom Baker, proved to be the surprise twist in last weekend's eagerly anticipated 50th anniversary edition of Doctor Who.

The 79-year-old, who has called Kent his home for years - living first in Boughton Monchelsea, near Maidstone, and now near the spa town - left his entrance until late in last Saturday night's Day of the Doctor.

He portrayed 'the curator' - a role which triggered huge excitement among the show's large global fanbase.

Mr Baker was the Doctor from 1974 to 1981 and has a special place in the heart of many fans.

The show itself pulled in more than 10 million viewers, with thousands more attending special screenings, in 3D, at cinemas around the country - including a host in Kent.

In fact, so many people turned out for the one-off showing, it finished third in the overall box office chart for films this week.
