Trekkies take on Timelord fans

RIVAL Star Trek fans and Dr Who buffs were to be head to head in Plymouth tonight to find out who knows the most about the intergalactic sci-fi programmes.

Fan clubs of the long-running TV series were being tested to find out if they know their Mudds from their Masters at an unusual competition at Waterstones bookstore in New George Street.

Fans of the two programmes, which both began in the 1960s and have survived in some form until the 1990s, often argue about which show is the best, and which set of buffs is the most knowledgeable.

Tonight they were being asked 50 taxing questions on each series such as: where was the Fendahl skull found in Dr Who? and name the Benzite in the Trek episode Coming of Age* The event, due to start at 6.30pm earth time, is the brainchild of Waterstones fiction buyer Steve Hillman - himself a fan of both series, but with a preference for Dr Who.

Speaking Klingon

He said: "A couple of years ago I did a Star Trek evening which went quite well. The Dr Who people said they wanted one, so I thought I'd discover who was the best. There's a lot of rivalry. Star Trek fans point out the wobbly sets on Dr Who, and Who lovers slag off the Trekkies for doing things like speaking Klingon."

Steve has invited Plymouth-based fan clubs, but the bash is also open to other fans.

The event includes a raffle and a quiz on sci-fi books, with prizes including a video, books, stand-up cut-outs of Kirk and Spock and a cardboard Tardis display cabinet. "The questions were written by me and took a couple of weeks to research," said Steve. "It's not going to be easy - they will have to know their stuff."

  • For sci-fi fact fans, the answers to the above questions are Kenya and Mordock.
