[edit]

I've been enthralled by the new series of Doctor Who (Saturdays BBC1), in no small part because of my joy in watching the thrill my children (six and three) experience.

As we watched on 6 May, for once I was unable to answer the flurry of questions that accompanied the end credits. The emotional power of the final scenes rendered me speechless and almost brought me to tears. The astonishing achievement of the current crop of writers has been to explore the "human" side of being a Time Lord; the devastating loneliness and guilt that go with living for centuries, flitting in and out of others' lives, never connecting, leaving those (broken-hearted) others to pick up the pieces.

The episodes with Sarah Jane and Madame de Pompadour have given a moving new dimension to an already timeless character.
