[edit]

Mrs. Kismet Delgado, widow of Roger Delgado, "The Master in BBC television's "Dr. Who" series, is having to live on social security benefits.

The French film company Telecip, for whom Mr. Delgado, 55, was working when killed in a road accident in Turkey last June, is refusing to accept liability and pay compensation. Normally, an actor's widow could expect compensation between £4,000 and £5,000 in these circumstances.

Mrs. Delgado, 43, said last night: "I am not quite destitute but I desperately need some sort of compensation. The French film company have behaved monstrously."

Had to pay £320

The Metropolitan Police informed Mrs. Delgado of her husband's death. She had to pay £320 to bring the body home.

Mr. Delgado was earning around £5,000 the year. Kidney trouble prevented him from taking out life insurance.

His agents wrote many letters to Telecip, and Equity, the British actors' union, has taken up the case. A spokesman said: "We intended to pursue her fight for compensation to the bitter end."

A Telecip spokesman said in Paris: "We would prefer not to discuss the matter with you at the moment."
