A TALENTED hairdresser has scooped one television's top awards.

Vickie Lang, of Southport, won a BAFTA Television Craft Award for hair and make-up design for her work on the Doctor Who special, An Adventure In Space and Time.

When asked how she felt about winning her first award, the 39-year-old said: "I don't know how to feel, it's overwhelming."

Vickie's passion for make-up began at an early age. She described how as a child she used to dress up her younger cousin as Adam Ant and other stars and characters.

The mentor took her to one side and told her she wasn't cut out to be a hairdresser.

As a relative newcomer to the industry, with An Adventure In Space and Time being only her fourth job, Vickie impressed the producers and was invited to work on the project.

The award-winning programme is a dramatised retelling of the creation of Doctor Who, commissioned for the series' 50th anniversary.

Vickie and her team were faced with recreating the look and feel of the 1960s.

She described the pride she felt looking through the black and white camera used to film the scenes, and at the same time looking at the original footage of a 50-year-old episode, An Unearthly Child. She said she tried but failed to spot the difference between the two.

A self-confessed Doctor Who fan, she said she would like to work on the main series. But, unfortunately, the show already has a dedicated make-up team. Her next project is working alongside ex-Doctor Who head writer Russell T Davies on his new show, Cucumber, about the life of a middle-aged gay man.

Vickie currently lives in Westbury, in Wiltshire, and travels around a lot as she has to go where the work is.

But she said she is regularly in her hometown as her family still live in Merseyside.

When asked what she might say to those who wished to follow a similar career path, she cautioned: "Don't be fooled into thinking it's all glitz and glamour.

"It's a lot of hard work and involves a great deal of commitment.

"I often have to get up at three o'clock in the morning and work right through the day."

The next phase of the awards, the TV BAFTAs, will be held on May 18.
