[edit]

SUMMER fashion is settled. We are to wear citrus colours. To look squeezable, I presume. Looking further ahead is trickier. Two shows on Monday offer vivid illustrations of the problem. The Dr Who TV movie is set in 1999 and, when that high-mileage people-carrier Tardis lands in San Francisco, we see immediately that not much has changed, or indeed improved, in American street fashion. To describe it as gross would be flattery.

Dr Who himself is still Top of the Fops and Elizabethan collars are still big with villains. Not only in 1999 but also in the far more distant future in which Cold Lazarus, Dennis Potter's sequel to Karaoke, is set. In the cryogenic-crazy world of 2368, skinny-rib hessian looks like the hot item among lab folk. Whoever else they may be waking up from the past, Armani is not among them. As usual in sci-fi, the villains get all the best lines. Diane Ladd, as the frisky mogul Martina Masdon, appears in what might be described as Tudor beach-wrap. Excitable female viewers may be even more impressed by her toy boy: clingwrap sarong and gold-lamé codpiece. Nothing new there then.
