Playing Dr Who's sidekick may offer excitement and fame, but it left actress Sophie Aldred more feminine aspirations trapped in a time warp.

Ace, the streetwise tomboy she plays in the series (above), is not, it would seem, all the 27-year-old actress has to offer. Out of bomber jacket and jeans, she is a sight to get the Tardis spinning.

Fed up with being cast as a tomboy, Sophie spent a day with a team of style experts ... and even gave herself a shock (left and far left). "Is it really me?" she asked. "Heavens, I have a very young, mischievous face, I'm always cast as a rough 'n' tumble teenager. I like slumming around in old clothes. Heels make me teeter and posh frocks make me feel I have to hold my stomach in. But it's nice to know I can look good -- even if I do go straight back to denims."
